High Blood Pressure And Dizziness - What's The Real Story?

High blood pressure and dizziness what's the real story? Well ironically dizziness in relation to blood pressure probably has more in common with low pressure than actually high blood pressure.

That being said it could be a serious problem and in many ways the fact that you're suffering from dizziness and potential drops in blood pressure are probably more important than the levels to which the blood pressure drops to so it is extremely important to get to the bottom of it if it is indeed a regular occurrence.

PRESSURE SORES

If you are suffering from dizziness and have correspondingly have been diagnosed with high blood pressure then it could indicate a whole series of events, all of which will need to be investigated by your doctor or healthcare practitioner. This last point cannot be stressed too heavily enough as there are too many occasions in relation to medical conditions where people place too much emphasis on common folklore or old wives tales as opposed to getting the correct medical advice from experts.

If you suffer from high blood pressure then by all means listen to other sufferers and people in general but don't ever make the mistake of ignoring the advice of professionals - it could be fatal to be the last mistake you ever make.

I make no apologies if I sound too dramatic but high blood pressure is serious and as such has to retreat it as such.

Back to high blood pressure and dizzy spells however. These could be as a result of the number of things none of which in isolation could be that serious but they could be little indicators of potentially something more serious further down the line.

Usually dizzy spells occur as a result of changes in your blood pressure from moving from low blood pressure to high blood pressure namely when you first get up in the morning as it is a known medical fact that your blood pressure is usually lowest at night and rises sharply upon waking. Conversely you could suffer dizzy spells when your blood pressure drops sharply as a result of dehydration, blood loss, allergic reaction, postural hypotension, namely some people suffer from dizzy spells when they change posture if they have been in one position for a long time. The dizzy spells could be brought about by what is called postprandial hypotension; this is usually an occurrence that affects older adults with high blood pressure or what could be best described as autonomic nervous system disorders such as Parkinson's disease and basically occurs after meals.

Lastly in certain cases dizziness could be caused by neurally mediated hypotension and by this I mean this usually occurs in young people in these usually calls because of a miscommunication between the high and the brain which leads to dizziness and nausea painting as a result of standing for long periods.

Whatever the reasons, if you are experiencing any dizziness or any form of light-headedness on a regular basis then you need to see your doctor as soon as you can. It might not be anything serious at all but it's much better for them to make the decision rather than you.

Sinus Pressure - A Quick Cure - Step Three

Could an ancient, very simple, noninvasive healing system hold the key to one of your main sinus cure elements? Almost any sinus expert would agree that keeping the sinuses clear is basic to preventing sinus problems. Many millions of dollars in sinus remedies could be saved every year by consumers if this simple and basic fact were understood and practiced. A sinus congestion that does not go away is probably the number one step toward a sinus infection, followed by pressure, or post nasal drip, and possibly a sinus headache. Why go through all that pain when the answer may lie, literally, at your finger tips and at no cost to you? You can keep your sinuses flowing nicely, in most cases, by following a simple procedure:

An old healing system used by millions

PRESSURE SORES

There is this ancient healing system from the orient called acupressure--not to be confused with "acupuncture" which is considerably more invasive. It works, basically, on the premise that applying finger pressure on certain specific, very precise, sites of the body stimulates the flow of healing energy to specific organs or other parts of the body. For example, you can boost your immune system and thereby help to prevent a sinus infection. You just apply finger pressure on a specific point on the forearm. But it must be done right after the first sign of the problem. Or even better, if you do this on a regular basis--it just takes a few minutes--you may be helping not only your sinuses, but your body in general to stay healthy. But let's concentrate now on sinus pressure.

How you can start your sinus flowing in minutes

Relax your mind and body. It is best not to do acupressure right after eating a meal. If your mind is relaxed and could visualize your sinuses exquisitely flowing, then you would obtain optimum results. I do this every morning right after awakening and it has prevented many a sinus infection and pressure. Press the tips of the index fingers on the side of your nostrils for 3 minutes--both sides at the same time. If you do it rightly you will feel your sinuses beginning to drain within minutes of starting this procedure

Conclusion

We do not have to rely on over-the-counter or prescribed medications all the time with their unfailing side effects. If we learn and try alternative healing and preventive procedures like the one just described we will be saving money and those side effects. Our Maker has put in the body the right healing mechanisms so that we can naturally heal our own ailments if we learn how to do it.

Effects Of High Blood Pressure On Tendons And Joints

The American Heart Association estimates that in the United States approximately 73 million people, age 20 years old and older have high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. However, only about 71% of people who have blood pressure even know that they have it. This can be dangerous because high blood pressure can lead to other serious conditions such as stroke and coronary heart disease which can led to heart attack. Many people don't understand the effects of this condition, particularly the effects of high blood pressure on tendons and joints as well as the kidneys and other organs. This can be dangerous and cause hypertension patients to suffer needlessly.

High blood pressure is the force that blood is pumped through the arteries when the heart beats. This is known as systolic pressure. Diastolic pressure is the force of the blood being pumped through the arteries when the heart is at rest. Hypertension occurs when and adult has a systolic pressure that is 140 mm Hg or greater or a diastolic pressure of 90 mm Hg or greater. Because blood pressure measures the force of the blood moving through the arteries, high blood pressure means that the heart must work extra hard to move the blood through the body. This can lead to pain in the legs as circulation is compromised.

PRESSURE SORES

Circulation in the extremities is also compromised due to effects of high blood pressure on tendons and joints stemming from narrowing of the arteries. Conditions such as atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases can cause the blood vessels to narrow which increases blood pressure. Because of this, cholesterol may accumulate in the tendons and joints which can cause inflammation. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon is a common condition that is linked to hypertension. It can cause inflammation and pain in the tendon that is in the back of the ankle.

High blood pressure has also been closely linked to kidney disease. Kidney disease can lead to the build up of excess uric acid in the body which can lead to gout. Because the kidneys are not functioning properly, the uric acid is not adequately expelled from the body. The uric acid then accumulates in the joints, leading to inflammation. Gout generally affects the hands and wrists as well as the knees, ankles, feet and the large joint of the big toe.

Diet, exercise and weight control can go a long way in alleviating the effects of high blood pressure on tendons and joints. It is also helpful to effectively manage high blood pressure and keep it under control. The effects of hypertension on tendons and joints can be painful and inhibit a your quality of life. It can make you a virtual prisoner in your own body, trapped by pain and immobility. It does not have to be that way, though. If you take the crucial steps to manage your high blood pressure, you can reverse the painful conditions that are associated with it. Hypertension can be managed and you don't have to live with the pain that some of its effects can cause.

Sinus Pressure and Drainage - An Herb That Can Help You

For millennia herbs have been used by many civilizations as the gold standard for healing. In the Americas, aside from the native citizens and a few others, herbs have not yet been widely accepted. Once considered by many as just part of native folklore this perception, however, is rapidly changing. For instance, take Germany and their Commission E report. A number of years ago this first rate nation's government, recognizing the medicinal and healing potential some herbs could offer, set up Commission E, as it is commonly known, to study herbs in that context. This study group used the "scientific approach" in discharging its responsibilities. Several years later The Commission E Monographs came into being, but of course, they were in German. Not long afterward, however, they were translated into English and I had the opportunity and joy of acquiring a copy shortly thereafter. The entity behind this English version is the American Botanical Council, of Austin, Texas.

I am going to be dealing in this article with just one herb which I have used for a number of years to treat some of my own sinus problems, and still do so today at the first sign that one of them would like to show again its ugly face. First a caveat: Please, remember this when using herbs:

PRESSURE SORES

Herbs lose their medicinal effect in about 2 weeks after you begin to use them. Stop for a couple of weeks and then you can restart Do not buy herbs with a dated shelf life expiring in less than a year Buy "standardized" herbs, whenever possible. The label should say so The one herb that perhaps is one of the most significant is going to, very likely, surprise you. This is what my regular doctor, an MD, told me once: "It is the most important of all herbs." And with this short preface, please, allow me to introduce you to: Garlic. That's right. I didn't make a mistake. It's garlic, but not presented to you as a savory, very pungent, tongue biting cooking herb, but as a medicinal herb. I have studied and used it for years and the more I do the more amazed I am at its healing properties. Let me give you a quick starter--which falls a bit beyond the scope of this article:

It has a powerful anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory effect Lowers high blood pressure Kills cold and flu germs Helps prevent heart attacks Fights: anemia, diabetes, hypoglycemia, acne, constipation, cancer Gives strong support to the immune system It's nature's "antibiotic" of sorts  It is the last two properties of garlic that would be of interest to you--baring, of course, that you may have other ailments that may be included in the above list, in which case the lowly and pungent bulb could even be of more interest to you. Whether you have a tendency to sinusitis, or sinus pressure, congestion, drainage, sinus headaches, sinus infection, especially the latter, it can help you prevent a serious infection or stop one that has just started. Garlic, to be effective as a sinus infection fighter or preventer, must be used at the very outset of the suspected infection. If one waits to see what is going to happen before using it, then it could be too late. Since there are no side effects involved--save the peculiar odor--it's best to go for it since the cost, etc., more than outweighs the potential benefits. By the way, the odor factor can be neutralized by chewing and eating some parsley sprigs.

The active ingredient in garlic is allicin. It is not produced unless the cloves are crushed or minced. Now a days it is possible to buy allicin by itself from almost any purveyor of herbs or at a health foods store. I buy mine through the internet, it's substantially cheaper that way.

Do your own research about this lowly, but powerful healing bulb and you, too, may become amazed and a regular user.

How to Find the Best Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor

If you have a health condition like hypertension or diabetes, chances are your doctor has advised you to monitor your blood pressure levels at home. To do this, you need to buy a good automatic blood pressure monitor.

wheelchair cushions for pressure sores

This isn't to say that a manual monitor is an inferior product. However, many people find the automatic type to be more convenient and easier to use. Let's say for instance that you are suffering from arthritis in your hands. Instead of having to squeeze that rubber ball that comes along with a manual BP monitor, all you will need to do with an automatic device is to press a button, and presto! The cuff automatically inflates to the appropriate tightness. This is important, because an under-inflated cuff could skew your measurements and not give you an accurate blood pressure reading.

PRESSURE SORES

So how do you choose from among the various brands available out there? Here are several tips:

1. Ask your doctor. Your health care provider is probably the best person who can make a recommendation when it comes to taking care of your health. Some blood pressure monitors come with extra features that you may or may not need. Your doctor will let you know what kind of knowledge he or she requires to manage your condition better, and therefore advise you on what sort of equipment is appropriate for you.

2. Ask your friends or relatives. Do you know someone who is regularly monitoring his or her blood pressure at home? Find out what kind of BP monitor he or she uses, ask what they like about it the best and the least, and see if they find it helpful enough to recommend to others for their own use at home or while traveling.

3. Go to a medical supplies store and test several models. Find out which ones are the most user-friendly for you, one that you will feel comfortable using several times a day every day.

Another helpful thing to do is to read up on which automatic blood pressure monitors have the best reviews. There are hundreds of them online, shared by people who have actually bought and used those products.

Pressure Area Care

Caring for a family member who is bed-bound has its challenges. Decubitis Ulcers (bed sores) are common and painful for the care recipient if not checked every 2 hrs. Decubitis Ulcers occur when a protruding part of the body has pressure upon it that needs to be relieved. This means the care recipient must be turned or have their position changed every couple of hours to relieve the pressure. Decubitis Ulcers are identified by redness on the body area. This indicates lack of blood flow because of the pressure placed upon it.

Care recipients with less muscle tone and fatty tissue are more susceptible to these pressure area injuries. All pressure area marks must be reported to the supervising nurse. Some relief can be given by rubbing sorbolene to the area. Gentle massage of the cream onto the reddened area, not vigorous rubbing. The carer is trying to restore circulation not rub the redness off the skin. It will take on-going care and attention to restore the proper colour and integrity of the skin.

PRESSURE SORES

Remember to change the position of the client every two hours. Place a pillow behind the effected area to relieve pressure whilst the client lies on the good side. Susceptible areas include, buttocks, ankles, heels, shoulder, blades, ears and elbows etc. Any areas where there is pressure upon the body from weight or position.

The comfort of the client is paramount to their well-being. A comfortable and pain free client means an easy client to work with. A pain free client will ensure good rapport and a trusting relationship between client and carer.

Sinus Pressure - Beyond the Cure

Most of us, not to say all of us, at one time or another have dealt with some sinus problem. It could have been sinus: pressure, congestion, sinusitis, excessive drainage or whatever. Since it went away or was treated successfully and did not recur often enough we do not pay much attention to it. On the other hand, others of us who have had to contend with the same sinus problems, but as an ongoing ailment that has become annoying, time consuming and expensive. But now we are cured and we do not wish to ever go back to our former misery. Is there anything we can do to keep our sinuses healthy?

gel cushions for pressure sores

The answer to this question is a resounding Yes, we can. We must, however, remember certain things. The most important one of which is that health, whether it be with reference to our sinuses, or health in general is not something that just happens or we inherit, but something we need to work at on a regular basis. Our eating, physical exercise, relaxation and sleep habitsare the main areas of our lifestyle which, depending on how we relate to them are going to determine, to a great extent, how healthy we are going to be. Sinus problems are usually an indication that we are violating some healthy living rule(s). In other words, if we want to keep our sinuses healthy we are going to have to maintain a life style which conforms to something like this:

PRESSURE SORES

Eating
We need to understand that food has more to do with keeping healthy than perhaps many of us realized. Large amounts of sugar are bad for us. So are dairy products. The combinations of both of them, for example, milk shakes, ice cream, are, obviously, a very sure formula for inviting sinus and possibly other health problems. Very small amounts very likely would not make much difference, at least, that's the way it is with me.

Physical exercise
For several decades now the importance of physical exercise to maintain good health has been widely accepted, usually as a way to reduce the risk of heart disease. But the same, basically, applies to the sinuses. General good health, which is promoted by exercise, helps the immune system work better, eg., to fight viruses that want to lodge in the sinuses, and other potential ailments; and make a person feel better in general.

Relaxation
Both physical, mental and emotional relaxation are necessary to keep the body and mind healthy. It is not, therefore, a waste of time to take time off everyday and deliberately change activities to do things that do not create stress, but that we enjoy and that takes the mind completely away from our regular work.

Sleep
While night sleep requirements may vary from person to person, there is nothing wrong with taking a short nap during the day, if we can. The quality, not just the quantity, is important. A heavy meal, a scary late movie or heavy mental work shortly before going to bed will most likelyl not induce a good night of sleep. Each of us need to assess what we need to do before we go to bed so our sleep will be sound and restful.

We can continue to think of sinus pressure, sinus headache, etc., as things of the past and continue to enjoy our new found freedom from these and other sinus problems as we live lifestyles that are conducive to good general and sinus health.

Low Blood Pressure - Why is Your Blood Pressure Low?

Why is your blood pressure low?

gel cushions for pressure sores

As a doctor with an interest in the subject, I'm often asked if a low blood pressure is normal or if such a reading indicates some abnormal process in the body? In fact - it can be difficult to precisely define what we mean by low BP. It all really depends on what's normal for you as an individual.

PRESSURE SORES

If 1000 people had their readings measured then we might expect to find a spread of readings. These might range from as high as 200 / 120 down to 80 / 50 with most people clustering around a level of around 130 / 85. Most of these people would have no symptoms of any kind - no matter what their reading actually was. Even those with obviously low numbers would be free of any symptoms in most cases.

The answer to whether it is normal or abnormal to have a low reading depends on what your own typical or average BP level is.

Here's an example of when it's normal to have low blood pressure.

If, for the whole of your life, you've always had readings of around 90 / 50 - then without doubt you have "low blood pressure" but there is truly nothing wrong with you or with your reading. You should be pleased that your risk of stroke or heart attack will be much less than many others. You're not likely to experience any symptoms from your "low BP." Putting it simply - your level is normal for you and needs no investigation or treatment. This kind of "normal low BP" will not cause you any symptoms and will need no treatment. It's just part of you and how your system works.

So, when might it be an abnormal finding?

If your BP is usually around 130 / 80 and suddenly or gradually drops to a level around 90 / 50 then it's very likely that you'll become aware of symptoms related to this change. As in the above example you have "low blood pressure" but in this instance it is not normal for you to have readings this low. You may need to see your doctor for tests because it's quite likely that some other disease or perhaps a medication has caused your reading to drop. Someone who develops low numbers like this will often experience symptoms such as those listed below.

The symptoms of an abnormally low BP level can include:

Feeling light headed, feeling dizzy, being tired or feeling fatigue on exertion, fainting, transient blurring of vision, or transient confusion. All of these low blood pressure symptoms will resolve if the blood pressure returns to normal.

The following are among the many possible causes of low blood pressure when it is abnormally low:

Medications for anxiety, medications for blood pressure, heart medications, diuretics or "water tablets" and some anti-depressant medications. Other medication related causes are painkillers and alcohol - particularly if these two are mixed together!

Non medication causes of include dehydration, heart disease and heart valve disease, recent heart attack, changes in heart rhythm, bacterial infection in the system, kidney diseases, diabetes mellitus and hemorrhage or bleeding.

As you can see, the above list of the causes is extensive and you should consult with your doctor if you are concerned in any way. Above all - don't try to diagnose your own condition - seek help if you are worried.

A low BP reading is not likely to do you any serious harm but it can leave you feeling pretty miserable.

High Blood Pressure - How Green Tea Helps

In traditional Chinese medicine, high blood pressure is often considered to be a problem of circulation of energy (qi) in the body. Poor diet and emotional imbalance are just two of the factors that can lead to this condition. A combination of acupuncture, teas and herbs is often recommended to balance energy flow.

gel cushions for pressure sores

Secondary high blood pressure is often due to exhaustion of energy reserves. This is known to the Chinese as kidney yin deficiency. The goal of treatment in this case is to build up and restore energy and a suitable diet is really important in aiding people who have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Avoiding too much fat and greasy food and doing physical exercises are the basic essentials, however, Chinese green tea and puerh teas are also very useful to these patients. The tea can help digestion and metabolism in the body and help to reduce the fat in the body.

PRESSURE SORES

In the University of Beijing a recent study showed that people who drink tea as opposed to people who drink coffee are 38% less likely to have lasting high blood pressure problems. The lowering of your pressure will allow you more Qi in your body and you will feel more energized as a result. Daily and gradual exercise is also highly recommended. The drinking of natural teas, especially Puerhr, along with a proper diet will assist with the reduction of fat and clinically tested levels of blood pressure and cholesterol.

Prevention and Treatment of Pressure Sores - The Right Mattress Can be a Remedy

For anyone in a wheel chair or who is relegated to bed for any length of time, pressure sores, also known as "bed sores" are an eminent threat. Complications from pressure sores can be fatal and, in fact, kill one in 12 people with spinal cord injuries in the U.S. Pressure sores are not easy to treat and can be difficult to avoid, but with a basic knowledge of causes, treatments and precautions, one is better equipped to deal with the threat of pressure sores.

wheelchair cushions for pressure sores

Pressure sores are caused when the weight of the body, resting on a surface, cuts off circulation to certain areas. Without blood flow, the affected tissue dies, creating a pressure sore. The severity of a pressure sore can range from a superficial wound, which heals once pressure is relieved, to a severe wound with irreparable skin damage as well as muscle, bone, joint, and even tendon damage. These more severe pressure sores can lead to infections which include joint infections, gas gangrene, and sepsis (bacteria from an infection entering the blood stream, often leading to shock and organ failure).

PRESSURE SORES

Treatment for pressure sores can be difficult. The first step is always to relieve the pressure responsible for the sore. Pressure can be relieved by shifting often to avoid sustained pressure in one area, as well as by using surfaces with good support. These surfaces include mattresses, cushions, and pads, designed to evenly distribute the weight of the body. One material which does an excellent job distributing weight is foam, such as memory foam or latex, which was designed to avoid creating pressure points on the body.

After the pressure is relieved, keeping the sore clean becomes important. A superficial wound can be cleaned using a mild soap while more serious wounds should be cleaned with saline solution (saltwater), to avoid infection. Dead tissue must be removed for a sore to heal properly. This can be done through surgery or less invasive means such as irrigation devices that allow the bodies own enzymes to remove devitalized tissue. Some sores are so severe that they require reconstructive surgery, which has one of the highest complication rates of any surgery.

The best remedy is prevention. This can be done by taking precautions to avoid conditions precipitate of sores. It is important to shift often when in a wheelchair or in bed to avoid continuous lack of circulation to one area. It is also important to check daily for pressure sores, as the more quickly they are found the more quickly and safely they can be treated. Again, support surfaces play a role in effective avoidance of pressure sores. It is important to have a sleeping surface or padding that distributes pressure evenly. There are many effective materials that can be used including gel, water, air, and foam supports.

How Does a Pressure Relief Mattress Work?

It's the memory foam that is used in mattresses of this type that is by far the most responsible. Would you believe that this new space age foam actually responds to heat given off from your body? That's right! This new space age foam that's now contained in so many hotel mattresses and theater seats around the globe actually becomes softer as it is warmed.

It's not just heat that it responds to. Memory foam is also chemically structured in such a way that it's simply responds more readily to pressure and more freely returns back to its original shape when the pressure is removed or lessened. Memory products of this type are often created by discovering ways to formulate longer stings of molecules.

The concept behind a Pressure Relief mattress is that different areas of a person's body exert more or less pressure against a mattress, such that these different areas of an individual's body require more or less support from a mattress at any given time. You see your main center torso will require more support than say, your arms and legs will.

The pressure relief mattress is designed to provide the correct amount of support on the various parts of the body as is needed. The result is that the weight of the entire body is far more evenly distributed. This is far different from a standard mattress where certain areas of the body endure more pressure, while other areas endure less.

This means that for a person who suffers from chronic pain of the back for instance, their lower back, buttock or hips aren't forced to bear the brunt of the weight support. Also for people who are bedridden, the prospect of bed sores is greatly reduced or eliminated all together and this is precisely why so many nursing homes and hospitals are quickly adapting this new technology.

It's just one more new product that was developed through the space program. NASA needed to come up with some type of padding that could change and adjust quickly as those sitting in it underwent the pressures of launch and re-entry. What they finally came up with was what is now referred to as memory foam and its finding its way into increasingly more products were special padding is needed.

Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) Devices

Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure devices (BiPAP) are a variation on the CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machines and both are prescribed for use with the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Both machines work by pumping airflow through sleep apnea masks to the nasal passageway that is connected via tubing to the BiPAP machinery. Unlike the CPAP which provides airflow at a constant rate and pressure throughout the night, BiPAP adjusts to the amount of air needed based on your inspiration and expiration, changing the level of airflow pressure according to your breathing rhythm.

A sleep study is performed to establish if the patient has obstructive sleep apnea, and to assess which machine will be most suitable for that person's treatment. In most cases it will be CPAP therapy that is prescribed after the sleep study and this form of treatment is covered by most insurance company policies. However, as the bi-level positive airway pressure devices are more expensive, some insurance companies will not cover this form of treatment unless it is prescribed as necessary by a physician.

PRESSURE SORES

For continued cover of the costs involved, both Medicare and private medical insurers will insist upon follow up consultations with your physician. This is in order to establish and document that the use of either machine is providing an improvement in your symptoms. As both CPAP and BiPAP are treatments that require continuous use every night to improve symptoms and quality of life. Many people find that they cannot use this form of sleep apnea treatment for many reasons as discussed below. It is important to tell your physician if you are finding it difficult to wear the device and they may be able to provide a different sleep apnea mask that is more comfortable for you to wear and use.

The benefits of using CPAP and BiPAP machines

Many studies have shown that CPAP therapy is the best treatment available for severe sleep apnea currently available today. Both bi-level positive airway pressure and continuous positive airway pressure are considered medically safe and effective for use in adults and children alike. Obstructive apnea is effectively treated with continued use and is generally a more effective treatment than undergoing surgery.

Health benefits include:

Drowsiness or sleepiness during the day will improve or be cured

Reaction times and concentration levels often increase with treatment

Both hypertension symptoms and heart function improve with continuous use

Quality of life of the obstructive sleep apnea sufferer improves

The risks of developing other serious diseases that are attributed to severe sleep apnea are reduced

Some studies indicate that life expectancy could be increased

Problems associated with CPAP/BiPAP machine use include:

Due to the rather cumbersome machinery involved the first few nights of usage are often difficult for most patients. Patients either have less sleep than normal or find it impossible to sleep due to discomfort in wearing the sleep apnea masks associated with both machines.

Other possible side effects of usage include:

Feeling claustrophobic or a sense of slow suffocation

Problem with exhalation

Sore/dry throat sensation or sore eyes upon waking

Nasal congestion or sinus problems

Headache

Nose bleeding

Discomfort of the chest muscles which is due to the increased lung volume from the forced airflow

Sleep apnea masks problem like rashes and skin chafing and bruising, or conjunctivitis from an air leakage due to incorrect and loose fitting of the device

Inability to sleep properly long term due to either discomfort or the sound of the machine through the night

It is thought that as many as half of patients who are prescribed with this form of therapy discontinue this form of treatment for one or more reasons

Bi-level positive airway pressure devices can also be used for the treatment of Hypercapnia and some forms of restricted lung disease.

While it is true that this form of obstructive sleep apnea treatment is difficult for the patient to get used to, the benefits of use and subsequent quality of life improvement out way the problems associated with CPAP/BiPAP therapy. Regular follow-up sessions with a physician can help to overcome the difficulty in using and fitting this device and lead to a long term solution for the sleep apnea sufferer.

Protein and Blood Pressure Benefits

Hypertension or high blood pressure can either be a condition on its own (primary hypertension) or can come as a symptom of or a byproduct of another condition (secondary hypertension). High blood pressure affects about 27% of American women that are aged eighteen to 74. The number rises with age however and 70% of women ages 65-75 have some level of high blood pressure. The condition affects African American at a higher rate than other ethnicities.

Hypertension does not tend to present any symptoms until there is a complication- most often these complications are a heart attack, a stroke or kidney disease. Hypertension might also be discovered by monitoring of the blood pressure - any number that is 120/80 to 139/89 is considered to be pre-hypertensive and should be closely watched. Lifestyle changes should be considered and strictly adhered to. These changes include losing weight, exercising and eliminating the other risk factors including smoking and excessive salt intake. Primary hypertension can be controlled with lifestyle and medication but cannot be cured. Secondary hypertension can be eliminated however, by eliminating the underlying cause.

PRESSURE SORES

The diet may be one of the easiest ways to help manage high blood pressure including using the DASH diet, (dietary approaches to stop hypertension) a diet that stresses fruits and vegetables and lowering the amount of meat and fats that are consumed. There are also some studies that show how protein, particularly soy protein and dairy protein can benefit the blood pressure.

The DASH diet includes:

- 7-8 servings of grain or grain products (whole grain)

- 4-5 servings of vegetables a day (1 cup raw and ½ cup cooked)

- 4-5 servings of fruit (6 ounces juice, one medium fruit)

- 2-3 servings of low fat or nonfat dairy products

- 2 or fewer servings of meat per day. (lean meats or fish should be selected)

How Protein May Help

A study has shown that a combination of milk based proteins can reduce salt induced increases in blood pressure. The combination of isoleucine/proline/proline/(IPP) and valine/proline/proline (VPP) with or without plant sterols can help lower the blood pressure following salted foods. These milk tri-peptides allowed a 4.8 point decrease in the systolic numbers and a 2.2 point decrease in diastolic number during the study.

There are currently one billion people in the world that have high blood pressure with that number likely to double by the year 2025.

Other Beneficial Proteins for High Blood Pressure

In addition to the tri-peptides IPP and VPP in milk, there are blood pressure and cardiovascular benefits in soy protein as well as whey protein. For instance, two servings of soy protein, which can be used in place of meat in the diet, can lower the blood pressure as well as lower blood cholesterol up to nine points.

Whey protein, which is a derivative of milk (it is a byproduct of cheese making) has been shown to improve blood vessel function in otherwise healthy people increasing blood flow and improving blood pressure. It is the whey protein derived peptide NOP-47 that improves vascular function.

Getting Enough Protein

The amount of protein that the average person needs will vary depending on weight, age, health and activity level. The American Heart Association recommends that the amount of protein in the average diet be no more than 35% of the overall calories, however your own doctor will let you know what the right amount of protein is for you. The average person should be getting between.5 to.8 grams of protein per kilogram of their body weight, less if they are sedentary and more if they are more active. A body builder may need at least 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of their own body weight.

There are times that the body needs additional protein including during sickness, trauma, burns and after surgery. During these times, it is important that the doctor prescribe a dietary regimen that provides the right amount of nutrition so that optimal health can be reached.

Protein comes from two sources, animal and plants. While it is important to get as much of the daily diet from whole food sources that are as close to their natural state as possible, there are some supplements that can be beneficial to make sure that the right amount of protein is reached. Protein supplements are good as between meal snacks or can serve as meal replacements.

Protein Powders as Meal Replacements

There are four main types of protein powder: whey, rice, soy and egg. It is best to use single protein powders; however there are some that are a combination of two or more of these.

Whey Protein - Whey is the most common type of protein powder with the whey protein concentrate as the cheapest. It is between 30 and 85% protein but can be a problem for those who are lactose intolerant. In addition to high blood pressure benefits, whey can help to stabilize the blood sugar after a meal and is also very beneficial for the immune system. Whey protein isolate has less lactose and may be more tolerable to those with sensitivities. The isolate also has more protein at 90%. Whey protein is one of the most calorie dense protein sources.

Soy Protein - Soy protein powder can also be in isolate and concentrate. Soy protein is highly digestible and is suitable for vegans.

Rice protein - Rice protein is the only protein that is considered to be hypoallergenic and is also suitable for vegans.

Egg Protein - Egg protein powder is made from the whites of the egg and is fat free. Egg protein is considered to be the perfect protein. All of the protein that is available in the egg is digested and used by the body.

Protein Supplements as a Between-Meal Snack

Protein supplements that have smaller calorie counts can be used as a between meal snack- a huge benefit because they can stabilize blood sugar and keep you from feeling hungry from meal to meal, keeping metabolism high and cravings low. Because weight loss is so important to lowering high blood pressure, these benefits can help keep any diet plan on track. These supplements that are used as between-meal snacks should be low in calories but high in protein and other nutrients. There should be a minimum of added ingredients especially excess sugars, but should still be palatable. After all, if you cannot tolerate the taste, it is of no benefit whatsoever.

Protein Bars - A protein bar can serve as a between meal snack however it has to be less than around 200 calories and should have limited sugars added.

You Woke Up With a Sore Lower Back - Why? Because of the Increased Pressure in the Discs At Night

A significant number of people have the experience of going to bed every night with a normal back and waking up in the morning with a sore one. Why is that? Why is morning low back soreness so common, and what causes it? As will be discussed in this article, the phenomenon is not that rare, and is caused by changes in the spine and the discs overnight.

gel cushions for pressure sores

When people go to bed, their spines actually increase in length. This is a result of the pressure in the discs in between the vertebrae changing. In fact, one study done in 1984 showed that people's sitting height can dramatically decrease throughout the day -- up to 19 millimeters in some cases. This is due to the discs losing some of the fluid that built up during sleep.

PRESSURE SORES

A spine that has spent the night horizontal and building up fluid is a spine that has lost some of its flexibility, as well. This is why people may wake up and feel that their lower back is sore and they just feel "stiff" upon rising from bed. Especially the ability to bend forward and flex the spine can be compromised after a night of sleep. The discs have expanded during the course of the night, built up fluid, and the spine has become more resistant to such bending.

The good news is that this soreness does not usually last all day, and there are actions that people can take to reduce their low back soreness in the morning. In fact, due to the changes in the disc pressure during the night, it is quite important for some people who are especially at risk of injuring or re-injuring their backs to take precautions in the morning to ensure their spinal health throughout the day.

The most important action to take is to avoid much forward bending for the first hour upon waking. The discs of the spine will lose about 90% of the pressure and extra height they have gained during the night in the first hour after getting out of bed. Because of the increased pressure during this first hour, though, doing any kind of spinal flexing or exercises that involve the back may be best avoided until later in the day.

People who are currently suffering from a back injury or who are in physical therapy for rehabilitation of an injury are frequently prescribed various spine exercises. While these can help with the healing process, if they involve a lot of flexing or extension of the spine, it may be best not to do these right after getting up. Exercises to increase stability and muscle endurance can help, but not if they exacerbate symptoms in the mornings.

Finally, the best advice may just be to stay aware that the spine increases in length during the night and the discs increase in pressure. But after the first hour or two after rising, most people's sore backs may begin to feel normal again. It is most important not to round the back or flex too much in morning, as just this simple avoidance of full flexion can help reduce the pain of a sore lower back.

Pressure Ulcer Nurse Explains How the Medical Record May Reveal Lapses in Skin Assessments - Or Not!

A few months back, I received another set of medical records to review and analyze for a great attorney-client of mine. It was a case about a stage IV pressure ulcer (also known as decubitus ulcers) that a patient had developed during a hospital stay.

Sounds familiar doesn't it? They all do.

PRESSURE SORES STAGES

But there was something very different about this case.

As a nurse, I have reviewed thousands and thousands of medical records; and when I started my review of this large stack of medical records, I noticed that there were great photos in there!

Now, I don't mean great photos as when you go to an amusement park, because these were photos of a stage IV pressure ulcer (the worst type of pressure ulcer you can develop!). I mean these were great photos because they painted the story of what really happened.

Most healthcare facilities; depending on their protocols, have now resorted to using photography as another way to document pressure ulcers. Photographing pressure ulcers in different stages, can be very helpful and beneficial to the healthcare providers because the may be able to determine if the pressure ulcer is healing, getting worse, or if it has remained unchanged.

But there are also disadvantages when photographing pressure ulcers.

The healthcare provider needs to remain consistent and continue to photograph the wound per protocol. An occasional photograph of the wound usually has no benefit.

Photographs of pressure ulcer that are taken too closely or from a distance may be difficult to use to assess the site. Photographs that are not timed and dated can de difficult to match up with the written portion of the documentation that describes the wound. Also, the location of the pressure ulcer must be documented on the photo; especially if the patient has wounds in different part of the body.

So, what was the real story that these great photographs revealed? The photos in the medical record I was reviewing and analyzing became the "unwritten" timeline that perfectly showed us in full-color how this pressure ulcer came about. Needless to say, my attorney's client was very pleased at the final outcome of this case! Great pressure ulcer documentation through photography can be beneficial to either the plaintiff or the defense.
