White Spots on Your Throat - What Are They?

When you look in the mirror do you notice little white spots on the back of your throat?

If so, then you most likely are searching through books and websites trying to self diagnose these white spots, fearing the worst. It could be some sort of strep throat. It could be "thrush"- a yeast infection in your mouth. Or it could be tonsilloliths.

PRESSURE SORES

Tonsilloliths or "tonsil stones" are little white or yellow balls of built up food, dead white blood cells and other particles in your mouth.

Ask yourself this: - Do you have a sore throat that accompanies the white spots on your throat? - Do you have trouble swallowing or does it feel like something is stuck on the back of your throat? - And, do you have really bad breath?

If you have answered Yes to any of the above, then those white spots on your throat are most likely tonsil stones. Tonsil stones occur in some people and not in others. Experts suggest that overactive salivary glands, an excess of oral bacteria, larger tonsils and bigger tonsil crypts, or crevices, all play a factor in tonsil stones.

Tonsil stones are not life threatening or even dangerous. They are just annoying as they can be irritable and also cause embarrassment. They have quite a strong unpleasant odour caused by the build-up of bacteria. Tonsil stones, similar to tarter, will continue to grow and harden with time. While some tonsil stones are only the size of a pea, others can grow as big as a marble.

Removing tonsil stones can be quite difficult. Some people simply sneeze or flex their throat and these white spots will remove themselves. Others have to use a toothbrush, a Q-tip or their finger to scrape at the tonsil stones. Others opt to have their tonsils surgically removed or lasered if the problem becomes too much.

If you are prone to these annoying white spots on your throat, then you need to ensure that you practice good oral hygiene. Adding baking soda to your toothpaste can also combat against the bad odour as well as chewing on mint, thyme or parsley leaves during the day.

And keep in mind that those yucky white spots on your throat as more common than you may think. You are not alone.

How To Tell If Your Headache And Sore Throat Is A Result Of Sinus

Sinus infection symptoms affect people in two ways; over the short term, usually from a few days up to two months or more than two months in which case the person would more than likely have a chronic condition.

Symptoms Of Sinus Infection

PRESSURE SORES

Sinus infection symptoms come in various forms. Headaches are a common symptom while facial pain and fever are others. In more severe cases, a sore throat will accompany infection while stuffiness of the nasal passages and discolored nasal drip are other tell tale symptoms.

It's important to realise symptoms of sinus infection aren't all created equal. Many times, your doctor will determine which sinuses are affected and if the symptoms are acute or in a worse case scenario, chronic.

What Is Sinus Infection?

In short, it's the inflammation of the nasal passages and sinuses. The sinuses are designed to connect the area between the nostrils and nasal passages as well as provide an insulation effect for the skull. When sinus infection symptoms are present, meaning bacteria has entered the sinuses, an infected person will experience anything from headaches to facial pain.

Bacteria will breed when the sinus openings become blocked. This can be as a result of the hairs in the sinuses not functioning properly with mucus being retained within them.

Sinus infection symptoms can result following respiratory illnesses such as colds and flu as well as allery conditions. Not every one is affected by symptoms of sinus infection with the estimated number being about one person out of every eight to ten.

Treatment Options For Sinus Infection Symptoms

If symptoms persist for any length of time such as headache and sore throat then see your doctor. Reducing sinus congestion is one of the aims of treatment. Antibiotics can be prescribed and usually do the trick while a corticosteroid spray to alleviate swelling can be effective.

In more persistent and extreme cases, a referral to a specialist may be required. Chronic sufferers have reported good results following surgery. Surgery is performed to clean the sinuses and this is usually recommended for people with fungal infections.

Home Treatment For Sinus Infection Symptoms

There are several ways to treat the symptoms of sinus infection from home. Humidifiers have proven an effective relief strategy or, if you are more adventurous and your budget doesn't allow it, then inhaling steam several times a day can provide much needed relief.

Expectorants are available over the counter in most cases and can aid in the relief of infection by thinning the mucus but prolonged use of expectorants is not encouraged. In fact, it might be wise to see a doctor first before self-prescribing yourself this medication.

For pain and inflammation, pain relief medication containing ibuprofen or aspirin can be effective. The warning is the same though; avoid prolonged use. Sinus infection symptoms are uncomfortable for those suffering from them and if in doubt about what to do or you want peace of mind, then always make an appointment to visit your medical professional.

Sore Throat Medicine

I think the best sore throat medicine is tea. Tea comes in a variety of flavors and it help your sore throat a great deal if you drink it often. Every time I would get a throat that is sore, especially during the winter months, I would drink some tea and, within a couple of days, it would feel better. I know how much of a burden a sore throat can be because it's difficult to swallow so that makes it harder to eat foods.

If you don't like tea there are many different substitutes for it that are effective for sore throats. You can try an apple cider vinegar gargle. Mix it with warm water and there you go. After you gargle the apple cider vinegar use a warm compress and place it on your throat. If you don't know where or how to find apple cider vinegar try a lemon gargle. Lemon is also easier to find and most people keep some of it in their homes. When I didn't have any tea I used the lemon gargle instead and it did help relieve some of the discomfort.

PRESSURE SORES

When I had a sore throat as a kid my mom would give me tea to drink and that is why I drink tea on occasion even when I don't have a sore throat. Sometimes the old traditional methods and cure for ailments are the best and they are passed down from generation to generation. When my kids get a sore throat their sore throat medicine will be plenty of tea.

Top 3 Reasons a Sore Throat is Annoying

Nearly everyone has had a sore throat at one point or another in their life. Sometimes they're mild and just barely annoying, but other times they are the cause of horrible pain. Depending on the cause, sore throats can occur by themselves or with a host of other symptoms.

This article will list three main reasons why they are annoying:

PRESSURE SORES STAGES

Reason one: pain - No one likes pain (at least not the pain that comes from being sick). Now sometimes this isn't an issue, but some sicknesses can cause almost unbearable throat pain, the kind that not even OTC pain medication can alleviate. There aren't many people who would disagree that this is annoying.

Reason two: swallowing hurts - The only thing worse than being in pain is being unable to swallow due to the pain. Sometimes you can get very hungry but you can't eat anything other than something soft like mashed potatoes because of the inflammation and soreness. No crackers, nothing crunchy, nothing salty, nothing spicy; you're reduced to eating soup and pasta, and it can be hard to meet your daily caloric requirements in such situations.

Reason three: sometimes you can't even talk - Occasionally you may get a sore throat so bad that it literally hurts to talk. This issue is multiplied exponentially if it happens on a day that you cannot call into work because you have an important meeting or presentation or something. The seconds pass like minutes. You can barely deal with the pain of just sitting there, yet when you activate your vocal chords: pain!

For many people, the sore throat is the worst part of a cold. And relief comes when it clears up, even though that means the next stage of the cold is the stuffy, runny nose, congested part. At least the pain is gone!

Strep Throat Affects All Ages

Strep throat is a very common illness that occurs in all humans of all ages most often in the winter months. It is an infection of the pharynx and possibly the larynx and the tonsils. It is a form of group A streptococcal infections. Group A streptococcal infections cause such illnesses as pneumonia, tonsillitis, arthritis, meningitis, osteomyelitis, scarlet fever and sinusitis. Strep throat is the swelling of the throat and can cause pain when talking or swallowing. Some severe cases cause problems with breathing because the throat swells up so much that it cuts off the airwaves through the mouth.

The symptoms of strep throat are rash, hives, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, red and enlarged tonsils, sudden and severe sore throat, yellow and white patches in the throat, trouble swallowing and general discomfort.

PRESSURE SORES STAGES

Doctors can diagnose strep throat by simply looking at a patient's throat. Doctors will also swab the back of the throat with a stick to pick up some of the mucus and test it for an infection. This is called a throat culture, which is also known as a Rapid Strep Test because the results come back within 10 to 15 minutes and are done within the doctor's office. They are not sent to a nearby medical lab for diagnosis. If the test comes back negative and the patient really isn't feeling well it could suggest that there is a viral infection somewhere else in the body.

If the throat culture comes back positive the patient will be prescribed antibiotics, which should have the infection cleared up within 36-48 hours. Because strep throat is contagious, patients suffering from the illness should not go to school or work for the duration of treatment. Doctors will write a note to send to school with a younger patient explaining why they missed two days of classes. Some strep throat cases can last as long as eight days.

Strep throat can be contracted through air-based germs. It can also be on infected pillow cases, toys, utensils, pens, pencils, clothing and even toothbrushes. The main antibiotic prescribed to strep throat patients is Penicillin. Once detected and treated, strep throat is not life threatening but can cause other health problems if left untreated by a patient. If they have symptoms of strep throat they should see a doctor and have antibiotics prescribed to avoid any long term problems.

Strep throat, which is caused by an infection, can also affect the blood, throat and the skin. It can also flare up herpes if the patient is suffering from herpes as well as causing scarlet fever. Some strains of strep throat can be so severe that they can cause the reduction of blood pressure which in turn can lead to lung injuries and kidney failure. Strep throat cannot be avoided because it is caused by air-born bacteria that is unavoidable and contagious. Even though strep throat is unavoidable it is still treatable. One way to try and avoid strep throat is to constantly keep washing your hands with germ killing soap.

Natural Remedies for a Sore Throat

A sore throat is one of the most common ailments afflicting people around the world; it is usually caused by a virus or bacteria and is often accompanied by nasal congestion, fever, and other symptoms of the common cold. Sore throats can also be caused, or exacerbated, by smoking, dry heat, or allergic reactions. A sore throat is rarely cause for a trip to the doctor; there are a number of steps you can take on your own to alleviate your discomfort.

wheelchair cushions for pressure sores

If you smoke, quit. There are a thousand good reasons to quit smoking now; the fact that cigarette smoke is extremely irritating to the throat lining is one of them. Because dry heat is another throat irritant, you can run a cool-mist vaporizer or humidifier in your bedroom while you sleep. The added moisture in the air will help prevent your throat lining from becoming too dry while you're sleeping. If it's winter and you're running heat in your house, you can place a bowl of water over the radiator or heating vent in your bedroom; this will have roughly the same effect as a humidifier.

PRESSURE SORES

Throw away your old toothbrush and use a new one; bacteria tend to collect on the bristles, and can enter your system through tender areas in your gums. It's a good practice in general to change your toothbrush on a regular basis.

One of the easiest ways to provide quick relief for a sore throat is a saltwater gargle. Salt can act as an antiseptic, and it draws water from the mucous membranes in your throat; the water helps clear phlegm. Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gargle, at least four times a day. Sore throat lozenges, which you can purchase in most convenience stores, also serve to increase saliva production and lubricate the throat. However, be careful giving throat lozenges to small children; they may choke on them.

In general, drink plenty of fluids. Some people prefer cold liquids, or even sucking on ice cubes or popsicles; others prefer warm drinks such as tea or plain warm water. There seems to be broad disagreement as to whether warm liquids or cold liquids are better for a sore throat; the bottom line is, keep your throat irrigated, and drink whatever feels soothing!

One interesting concoction for soothing a sore throat, recommended by some, is to add one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar, a pinch of cayenne pepper, the juice from a quarter of a lemon, and a teaspoon of honey to a cup of hot water. Drink one cup four times a day. The prospect of downing such a potent cocktail may be sufficient for one to take adequate preventive measures and avoid succumbing to a sore throat to begin with. Honey, however, has antibacterial properties and has long been used to treat sore throats; honey also draws water from inflamed tissues in your throat, reducing swelling. Add several teaspoons of honey to a glass of hot herbal tea or hot water, or make hot lemonade with honey, adding several teaspoons to hot water mixed with the juice from half a lemon.

Other common food items that can alleviate a sore throat include Vitamin C (drink orange juice or some other citrus drink); Vitamin C will boost your immune system and help fight off infection. Also, dried garlic has antibacterial and antiseptic properties; you can add extra garlic to your food as a seasoning.

Various other natural products have been shown to help. Slippery Elm is a tree common to eastern North America; the inner bark of this tree contains mucilage, a gel that swells when mixed with water. This mucilage has been traditionally used as a sore throat cure; it is believed to reduce throat irritation. It is sold in capsule form, and is also found in various herbal teas. Check at your local health-food store.

Licorice root has also long been used as a remedy for sore throats; it is a common ingredient in various herbal teas. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, this root has been used to help treat a variety of ailments including stomach ulcers, canker sores, and viral infections. You should not consume licorice root in large amounts, however, as it can cause high blood pressure and lower your body's potassium level.
