Advantages and Disadvantages of Dental Braces

Invisalign Advantages and Disadvantages

Invisalign or the invisible braces to be worn on teeth have several advantages when compared to traditional metallic braces. First is of course the apparent invisibility of the aligners which makes it especially convenient for patients who do not want to wear the traditional wire and bracket braces. The aligners are also marketed to be more comfortable than the network of metals that the traditional braces are. The patient has to no more worry about the pieces of food stuck in the metallic braces as the Invisalign braces are removable. Owing to their removable nature, maintaining oral hygiene is not a problem with Invisalign braces. However, it is also expected that the patient does not misuse the removability of Invisalign braces. For best and fast treatment, the braces should be worn at least 20-22 hours every day, with the exception of eating and drinking. Drinking water is allowed while wearing the Invisalign braces.

PRESSURE SORES STAGES

The Invisalign dental braces avoid many of the clinical disadvantage of traditional aligners. In case of traditional treatment plan, the root of the teeth is shortened, a phenomenon called root resorption which can be avoided by the Invisalign treatment. Also, with Invisalign there is no chance of demineralization or tooth decay, which occurs in about half the patients using traditional aligners. The pressure on gums and the adjacent teeth tissues is also relieved by the Invisalign treatment. The patient is completely relieved from gum inflammations and swellings that can occur while wearing traditional braces. Moreover, the Invisalign treatment plan is considered quicker than the traditional braces.

Another great advantage of the Invisalign braces is that the patient can have a complete visual idea of the realignment of the teeth. Since the Invisalign treatment process is a computerized process, the patient can actually see the different stages of improvement of the teeth structure and plan an effective treatment plan along with the dentist. With the different Invisalign treatment plans, the patient can decide on which treatment plan will be most effective, after the consultation with the dentist.

The key disadvantage of using Invisalign is that the success of the treatment plan depends on the persistence of the patient to wear the invisible braces. The removability of the braces poses as disadvantage as the patient might feel compelled to remove them at the slightest feeling of discomfort. For the Invisalign treatment to be effective, the dental braces should be worn continuously for at least 20-22 hours a day, only removed while eating, drinking and brushing the teeth. Moreover, the Invisalign system is also somewhat expensive than traditional braces. However, there are several convenient treatment plans from which the patient can choose to decide the cost of the Invisalign treatment. In addition, if the patient does not wear the aligners regularly, the next set of the aligners does not fit and new aligners have to be designed, adding to the total cost of the treatment.

The Invisalign aligners are composed of implantable grade polyurethane, and this might create allergic responses in some patients. Although the symptoms of allergic responses to the aligners is extremely rare, yet the symptoms might include sore throat, cough and nausea.
