Foot Corns - A Common Concern

Pressure on the feet due to tight fitting footwear causes foot problems like painful foot corns. These corns are actually multi-layered skin under or between the toes. The annoying painful feet are the common concern of everyone. However, our body has its own way to oppose this extreme pain and it thickens the skin at the point where the pressure is excessive. This small thick mounted skin is known as corn.

The main cause of foot corns is ill fitting footwear. However, there are other causes too, like improper walking styles, hammer toe or other bony prominences. Also, the job of a podiatrist is treatment of these corns. It is advised that these painful corns should be treated as early as possible because severe infection could be caused if left untreated, though they seem not so dangerous in the early stages.

Most of the people try self treatment if affected by painful foot corns. Cutting corns or applying ointments or corn plasters; all are the self treatments. The cutting of corns can be dangerous and open the door for infection if performed by untrained hands. Intensive care should be taken while having self treatment else it can lead to accidental wounds which can increase within the hot humid environment of the footwear. If corn is not infected by poor cutting then ointments are safe to use and often work very well. However, cautions should be taken while using ointments and follow the directives as instructed on the label. It would be smart to follow the instruction of a podiatrist instead of self treatment.

A podiatrist is the one who identify the root cause of the foot corns and take care of them accordingly. A podiatrist advices to his patients upon correct fitting of shoes as well as decides if padding of is required or not. The padding prevent from the pressure under feet. He even advices surgery if required in cases of bony prominence.
