Natural Cold Sore Remedies

First of all, what are cold sores? Cold sores, despite their name, have actually nothing to do with colds. They are small, painful, fluid-filled blisters that usually appear on the lips, gums, or roof of the mouth. The herpes simplex virus causes the appearance and makes the sores contagious. Pain or tingling may turn up one or two days before the cold sores actually appear.

There are many cold sore remedies nowadays. There are, however, several remedies that are natural and are easy to use and find. One of these is lysine; lysine is an important amino acid, which means that we must get it through food or supplements because the human body cannot make lysine. Lysine is used to make protein which aids in the production of infection-fighting antibodies, body tissues, enzymes, and hormones. Lysine is found to cause the inhibition of the spread of the herpes simplex virus.

Lemon balm is also one of the natural cold sore remedies and is effective in healing and even in decreasing the frequency of recurrences. How is this so? First of all, lemon balm has antiviral properties. Secondly, in a research conducted in certain dermatology clinics and hospitals in Germany, lemon balm promoted the healing of the cold sores in five days instead of the usual ten. Lastly, regular usage of lemon balm cream also reduces the frequency of the appearance of the sores.

Even mushrooms can be used. Reishi or Ganoderma lucidum is a mushroom that is used in traditional Asian medicine to boost the immune system. It is believed that a typical dose of 600 milligrams once or twice a day prevents further spreading of the herpes simplex virus.

Resveratrol is a compound that can be found in red grapes is shown to be effective as another remedy due to the fact that laboratory studies show that it is active in fighting against the herpes simplex virus. There was a study that was conducted by the Northeastern Ohio University that proved that the topical application of resveratrol cream two, three, or five times a day suppressed the development of the virus if a applied one to six hours after the infection.

Some substances such as propolis can also be used. Propolis, or bee propolis is a substance that is a brownish substance that are used by bees to "cement" their hives. Propolis is believed to work by preventing the virus from entering the body cells and preventing the replication of the virus.

These are some cold sore remedies that are simple and natural, which makes them easy to find and use.
